History and culture
Neum is a place of rich history, reaching back to ancient times, as evidenced by numerous archaeological sites in its surroundings. Although first mentioned by name as “Neuense” in the year 533, traces of settlement in this area date back to much earlier periods.
Neum as a modern tourist destination
Until 1718, Neum was part of the Republic of Dubrovnik, after which it was handed over to the Ottoman Empire as a buffer zone between Dubrovnik and the Venetian Republic. With the arrival of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1878, Neum became part of Bosnia and Herzegovina — all while preserving its unique Mediterranean spirit.
A new chapter began in the mid-20th century with the development of infrastructure, the construction of the first hotels, and the transformation of Neum into a modern tourist destination.
Despite the various influences throughout the centuries, Neum has preserved its authentic Herzegovinian identity, still visible today in daily life, local customs, and the heartfelt hospitality of its people.
