Nestled at the foot of Mount Žaba, the Old Town of Hutovo stands as one of the most significant cultural and historical landmarks in the wider Neum area. Although there are no precise historical records regarding its origin, archaeological findings indicate the presence of a prehistoric settlement at this very site. The central structure of that early settlement was a watchtower, strategically built to oversee an important trade route that had connected the hinterland with the Adriatic coast for centuries.
The first written mention of Hutovo comes from the year 1525, recorded by the Franciscan friar Siksto in his travel diary describing his journey through the village en route from Slano to Zavala. One theory suggests that the name “Hutovo” derives from the Latin word huti, meaning falcon, while another tradition holds that the town was named after a nobleman named Huti, who lived here during the Roman Empire.
Locally, the town is also known as “Hadžibeg’s fortress,” named after Hadži Mehmed-beg Rizvanbegović, who in 1802 became the first and only captain of the Hutovo captaincy — the last established captaincy in Bosnia and Herzegovina, active until 1832. He converted the former customs tower, once used for collecting tolls from passing caravans, into a fortified stronghold.
At its peak, the Old Town of Hutovo boasted as many as nine defensive towers. Today, only one remains standing — a solemn yet powerful witness to the region’s turbulent past and enduring strategic importance.
Located in the village of Gradac, just 15 kilometers from Neum, the Church of St. Ana was built in 1619 on the foundations of an earlier pre-Ottoman church.
Historical records name friar Blaž Gračanin as the church’s builder. It was later restored in 1926 to mark the thousandth anniversary of the coronation of King Tomislav.
Vranjevo Village is another historically significant site, inhabited by the Romans as early as the 1st century BC. Thanks to its favorable Mediterranean climate and strategic location, it served as an important Roman and later medieval center.
During the construction of the modern Neum–Stolac road, an untouched Illyrian warrior’s grave from the 5th century BC was discovered. The burial site contained remarkably preserved items, including a warrior’s helmet, which now forms part of the archaeological exhibition at the Neum museum — offering a rare glimpse into the region’s ancient past.
The hinterland of Neum is home to numerous medieval tombstones, some of which have been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The most prominent necropolises are located in Brštanica, Međugorje near Glumina, Gornje Hrasno, Toplica near Vinine, Vranjevo Village, as well as Crkvine and Karasovići. Less known but equally captivating sites can be found in villages such as Gradac, Moševići, Podhumac, and Lišća.
Adorned with carvings of crosses, weapons, vines, and horsemen, these monuments speak to the rich and distinctive history of the region. Far more than stone remnants of the past, these sites are stories carved in stone, inviting every visitor to step deeper into the layered heritage of Neum and its surrounding landscapes.
Located in the heart of old Neum, the Church of St. Anthony serves as the spiritual center of the local community.
This modest yet beautifully maintained stone church, built in the early 20th century, regularly hosts masses and religious ceremonies-especially during the summer season.
Beyond its historical sites, Neum also offers natural treasures such as the serene Tiha Luka Bay.
This peaceful cove is perfect for swimming, kayaking, and watching breathtaking sunsets, providing an ideal escape into nature’s embrace.
